Help your children make the grade with educational toys and gifts

Support their learning with educational toys and gifts

The new school year has just begun and children are coping with a frenzy of educational activity following a long Summer Holiday.

Whatever the age, new challenges are being faced by our children and of course the adults have to support and gently give advice to ease their stresses while carefully ignoring their own anxiety that the new school term can create. The question is how can adults help children and support their learning without confusing them or teaching them out of date methods and how can we remain calm when our little one needs help?

Just being involved with their learning gives children confidence and motivation. Your support and patience and showing an interest in what they are doing makes a huge difference to way a child feels about school.  We all know helping with schoolwork can be very stressful when your child has not understood what was taught but you must try to be calm, positive and reward them for their achievement. The smile on a child's face when they finally understand a problem is a wonderful reward for you!

The Department of Education has a webpage that may help you called Helping Children to Learn at Home that has all kinds of useful activities and advice to help you and your children with their education. They believe "By supporting your child's learning and development at home, you can have a real impact on how well they succeed at school and beyond".

Mathematics
Introducing educational activities into everyday life can help whether it is counting things in the kitchen, when you're out shopping together or adding up car numberplates on the move.

We have a number of Numeracy and Maths based products at Up to the Moon. One of our favourite products is the Fraction Tower Cubes which clearly and simply demonstrates how fractions work and allows the child to see how they are connected.  Following this the Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Tower Cubes then shows how each form of division relates with each other. A lot clearer than using cut up bits of paper or trying to find the right words to explain things.

The Maths Whiz is great for speeding up mental arithmetic and working out mathematical problems. It is true that the more practise they have the quicker the brain will become at solving a problem.

Ready Set Tell Time makes the activity of learning how to tell the time into a fun game. See a review for this product from our friends at Childminding Help at  www.childmindinghelp.co.uk/productreviews

Literacy
There are many ways you can help your child with their reading and writing skills:

• Reading to your child at bedtime is an important way to give them an appreciation of literature and gives you adult/child time together

• Show them interesting articles in magazines and newspapers that may encourage them to read the piece whether it's about local playgrounds, pets, football or fashion

• Play word games when you are out and about such as I-Spy, Word Association (the next word that comes to mind) or finding the alphabet from A-Z in car numberplates

• Trace the words with your finger as you read to them so they can begin to identify the words occasionally asking them to read a word

• Encourage them to try new books that may interest them and motivate them to read more

Our Literacy & Languages category has many products that can help you to support your child with their reading and writing. Some of the products we have that make learning fun include the ABC Cookie Jar which makes learning letters into a game and has great activities to motivate children. Our Pretend & Play School Set is great for making children feel comfortable about school through role play and has even been known to help them get their homework done if you pretend to be the teacher (or is that just me)!

General Education Products
For general educational products our Educational category has products that will help in all areas of the curriculum from Personal Development and Role Play products to Geography and History based products. These have all been selected to encourage education at home and support learning so please look at our ranges to see if there is anything that can help you and your family.
